Microchipping Your Cat And Its Importance

Did you know that less than two percent of cats that end up in a shelter, are likely to reunite with their original owners? The reason is because of the lack of microchipping. Well, what is microchipping you might ask? A microchip is a small form computer the size of a grain of rice. This device is an ID for your cat. It stores the cat’s name, and the owner’s name and contact information.

One of the most common microchip companies is PetLink, a trusted registry that works with the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). The microchip is built to last for 25 years, that’s longer than the average lifespan of a cat.

Some people like putting devices on collars that have GPS tracking, all though this is a great idea, it should be used in conjunction with a chip. The GPS often has a range limit or a battery limit, and can be lost if the cat’s collar is removed or if the device falls off.

Getting a microchip is just like getting a shot. The injection is given in the scruff between the shoulder blades. It can be done at a normal appointment, at any age, or during the spay/neuter procedure. Reactions, if any, are extremely rare and minimal.

Make sure to keep all information up to date with the microchip company- this can be easily done online at their websites or with a phone call. If need be, contact your vet office for assistance- they should have a record of which company made the chip and the chip number.
